A few of us were surprised by how cold it was at race start and decided to wear whatever we had with us - The choice we had was either be uncomfortably cold and waste energy shivering, or to be more comfortable temperature wise doing the extra work that resulted from our jackets flapping in the strong winds. Mind you the most aerodynamically equipped, especially the younger and lighter riders also found the wind a challenge for their deep dish or disc wheels. In short, it was not a fast night. Only eleven of the 50 who had ridden an earlier TT in 2013 improved upon their previous season-series best, and of those, the two most improved - William Thompson and Aaron Fillion - had the excellent excuse of not having done an OTT since Good Friday (2013-Mar-29) - Not as if Aaron would bother noticing a breeze that was so far below the resistance that he generated with his 48.474km/h average speed for a first place time of 18:34! More surprising in terms of improvements were the three database bests achieved tonight - Congratulations to cadet woman Taylor Saravanamuttoo for her 8.14% cube speed improvement. She was happy to be trying out the Cervelo that Andrea McKay donated to the OBC for the use of young females in the OBC racing program. Great riding from Veteran C (50-59 years old) male Eric Appotive, who is in his 4th year of riding time trials, posted a 3.84% improvement. Lots of encouragement for more improvements from Cadet female Katherine Maine. So far she has improved in every one of the three time trials that she has ridden. Finally, kudos to all who come out to ride or help with these time trials. It's fun to have you out there.
These results were posted on the OBC site circa 22:30 on 2013-May-16 and are available here for your added pleasure and analysis. My (Celia McInnis') time was reported a minute faster than it should or could have been with my jacket flapping in the strong wind, so I entered my time correctly on my site and sent a note to Peter Tregunno to fix it in the OBC results.
