This site, now in its 27th season, is a labour of love and fun from one of Ottawa's most avid time trialists and number crunchers. It adheres to and is permitted by the laws of Canada, promotes the objectives of every bicycle club whose results are shown, and is donated free of charge by myself for your enjoyment and usage. If you would like results from series you ride in to be shown here, give me (celia.mcinnis@gmail.com) a shout!
NOTE that this site had to be quickly moved to a new server with a new version of Perl. Unfortunately the way of interacting with the web form has changed, so I'll have to do some reprogramming to get the buttons and search boxes working. Meanwhile the links work fine and you can always add query specifications into the URL! :-)

Thanks to John Cooper for taking pictures while I was time trialling with our usual paparazzo Morley Dore. Thanks as well to all of the other volunteers who make this event a pleasure to participate in regardless of any weather challenges!

Tonight we had cloudy skies with 13km/h winds from the south-southwest, a temperature of 23.5C and air pressure of 101.5kPa. Rain was predicted, but fortunately did not materialize. This was the final time trial of the Women's Time Trial series, and people with OCA insurance were invited, or could invite themselves to ride on a team so long as there was at least one woman on the team. The rider turnout was small - 14 people spread over 8 teams, perhaps because of the prediction of rain to start during the time trial. Fortunately no rain materialized, letting participants and volunteers enjoy the event and arrive at the awards dinner afterwards dry. Here are the links for the 2016 WTT rankings and category rankings (which are also always listed at the bottom of the weekly result pages). Note that the "most improved" rider this year was determined to be Penny Carmichael. Since the prize for the most improved is substantial (an OBC kit), we put some effort into making a good choice. First of all, look at the following graph showing all of the results, sorted by date, for the women who are eligible for WTT awards (namely those who rode at least 4 WTT events with at least 3 being 15km WTT events). A number of factors lead to first limiting the most improved down to two women: Margaret King and Penny Carmichael:

  1. a string of successive improvements as the season proceeded (a longest string of 4 successive improvements for Margaret and a longest string of 5 successive improvements for Penny).
  2. the first attempt was quite a bit slower than the last attempt (34.351km/h to 38.190km/h for Margaret and 30.201km/h to 33.687km/h for Penny).
  3. whether all-time PBs were set - Both Margaret and Penny set personal database bests for 10km while just Penny also set a 15km personal database best.
  4. the span of time over which the improvements occurred. Margaret's large improvement between her 10km rides and her 15km rides was less surprising when we consider that there was more than a month between them, whereas Penny rode multiple WTTs betweem May 3 and July 12.
However the graph doesn't give sufficient information to really determine who was the "most improved", because we had some VERY difficult evenings where nobody improved. I do measure "Event Factors" which can help to give some more information. See this chart which is sorted by the "Event Factor" for each rider.
  1. Noting that a higher event factor means a "slower" night, we see that Penny's second ride was on a more difficult night than Margaret's second ride, and hence Penny did not improve for her second ride whereas Margaret had a substantial improvement on a much easier night, thus artificially inflating her average performance ratio.
Because of points 1, 3, 4 and 5, I would say that the numbers favour Penny Carmichael as the "most improved".
