Sometimes things just don't go smoothly, and tonight was one of those nights, so we might as well laugh and enjoy what transpired. There was a brutal wind from the south, the most difficult wind direction on our course, and the air pressure was higher than optimal. Clearly some excuses were needed for how slowly we were likely to time trial, and some were elicited - 30 concerts/week, sore knee, pinched nerves in neck, feeling lazy, dead groundhogs on the road, and so on. It seemed, though, that excuses were needed as much for slow arrival times, at both the registration area and the start line, as for slow time trial times! Several riders arrived after the numbers had been given out, even after the clock had been started, and quick registrations (always aiming to please and accommodate and entice) of these riders distracted Jim and I (always good intentioned) from letting some of those who had not yet ridden a 15km time trial where the start line was. Anyway after dealing with the late comers, Jim hurried off to the start line in his van to let off the first rider, only to find that none of the early riders were anywhere in sight. Riders who had only ridden 10km events had led (again with only the best of intentions) the new participants 2.5km past the 15km start point to the 10km start point. Oh well, we decided to celebrate at the end with photos showing us pointing in all directions to illustrate the general state of confusion for the evening! Thankfully the groundhog carcasses were nowhere in sight during our race, but one rider, Dahlia Tanasoiu encountered a bigger obstacle. Just before the finish line, a police car, complete with flashing lights, pulled onto the shoulder in front of her to ask Jim what we were doing. Dahlia stopped, as she legally had to, and the only thing that would have been more amusing would be if the cop had pulled such a stunt on our fastest participant, police woman Kathy Bradley!
Next Monday is a holiday, but we would like to have a time trial to make up for this one. Let celia@drmath.ca know if you would like to ride so that we know if it is worthwhile to have one.
