We had side winds from the north again tonight - almost entirely from the north for the riders who departed early, and then with an increasing east component as the evening proceeded. Side winds are always the most difficult, and so it is not surprising that, despite increased fitness in many of the participants, only 23 out of the 80 who had ridden previous 15km OBC Open Time Trials this year managed to improve or equal their previous season-series best. The most noteworthy ride of the evening was Derek Gee's 19:52 (45.302km/h). Note that Derek is in his first year as a Cadet, and will only turn 15 in August! Note that currently Derek has the third fastest of the Cadet times for 15km, and that the faster rides were from Alex Cataford (19:38) and Andrew Lattimore (19:49) when both were in their second year as a cadet. Congratulations Derek! Note that 12 people improved upon or equaled their previous 15km database best, and two were given times which indicated more than a 25% increase in cube speed - namely Olivia Garay (28:28 - 26.87% improvement) and Todd Fairhead (20:13 - 25.97% improvement). Olivia was riding only her second time trial, so a huge improvement is not unexpected for her. Todd was on his fourth time trial over the past two years and the previous ones were very consistent in the 21:50 to 21:57 range. Another time which is very unexpected is 26:50 for Claude Dréano, a rider who had never previously ridden slower than 24:38 for 15km. Afterwards she let me know what had happened: "I tried to pass a commuter then realized I wouldn't have time as a car was coming behind me. I was in my areobars and couldn't steer properly. And badaboum !!! in the ditch... I wished the ground would have been a bit softer and the grass more welcoming... A few lumps and scratches and a bruised pride this morning ! I'll redeem myself next Tuesday :-)". Congratulations to Vincent De Haitre (20:03) for doing a Junior best time of 2012 and to Peewee female Nia Byway (26:39) for being the fastest in her 10-12 year old age range since Julie Peltz in 1993 managed to do three times in the 25 minute range.

(Lest complaints about me just lazily sucking in the results surface, I wish to make it perfectly clear that I would look after the data entry. Historically, for the decade starting in 1998 I had all of the WTT series up within a few hours of the event, and likewise for the OTT series from 1999-2002 and again in 2006. More recently, I have written web software which can run from the start/finish lines to register, seed, calculate rider times from elapsed times and database the results immediately. The OBC Board however, not only won't let me volunteer here, but strangely enough they actually expelled me from the OBC for donating this time trial web site to you !)
